Betfair Premium Charge: How It Works and Who It Affects
Beyond the standard commission everyone pays, Betfair applies an additional charge to consistently profitable traders. For years it was called the Premium Charge — Betfair has since rebranded it as the Expert Fee, but the concept is the same: an extra deduction from the gross profit of traders who exceed certain thresholds.
Most traders will never encounter it. For those who do, here's how it works.
- Applies only to traders with significant gross profit over a rolling 52-week window - Most users pay standard commission only - Maximum rate is 40% — down from 60% under the previous system - If you're in this bracket, it means you're trading with genuine consistency
Who It Applies To
Three conditions must all be met simultaneously:
1. Lifetime profit positive — your account's total history must be in the green.
2. Gross profit above £25,000 in the last 52 active weeks — weeks where you placed bets.
3. At least 100 markets bet into — a minimum volume of activity.
If any one of those isn't met, no additional fee is charged.
The Fee Bands
| Gross profit (52 weeks) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Under £25,000 | Standard commission only |
| £25,000 – £100,000 | 20% on the excess |
| Over £100,000 | 40% on the amount in this band |
The fee is calculated weekly using a rolling 52-week window. Standard commission already paid that week is subtracted — you're topping up to the band rate, not paying it on top.
The Buffer
The system includes a Buffer mechanism that accumulates credits in two situations:
- Weeks where you have a net loss
- Extra commission already paid above the standard rate
This buffer offsets the fee in future weeks. Recent losses reduce the amount subject to the additional charge.
What It Means in Practice
For most traders — especially in the first few years — this is irrelevant.
The correct focus for anyone building a trading operation is the standard commission rate and developing a consistent edge. The Premium Charge is a problem to solve when you get there — and getting there is the goal.
The limits and bands were set by Betfair and may be updated. Always verify current conditions directly in the Betfair Help Centre.
